Forex trading in Suriname operates under the regulatory oversight of the Central Bank of Suriname (CBvS), which supervises the foreign exchange market consisting primarily of commercial banks and currency exchange offices. There are no restrictions or limitations placed on foreign investors in converting, transferring, or repatriating funds associated with an investment, such as remittances of investment capital, earnings, loan or lease payments, or royalties (1). Funds can be freely converted into usable currency at legal market clearing rates with permission from the Foreign Exchange Commission.
The Foreign Exchange Law 1947 regulates Suriname's foreign exchange regime, requiring that foreign and domestic exchange transactions between residents and non-residents obtain approval from the Foreign Exchange Board. Since 1992, the Foreign Exchange Board has considerably liberalized the system for current account transactions through General Rulings, though capital transactions still require special approvals often in consultation with the Central Bank to protect state foreign exchange reserves (2). The Central Bank refrained from foreign exchange interventions since December 2021, allowing exchange rates to be fully market-determined.

While online retail forex trading through international brokers is legal in Suriname, the Central Bank does not specifically regulate foreign retail forex brokers operating from abroad. The banking system consists of major commercial banks including Republic Bank, DSB Bank, Fina Bank, and Hakrinbank, with most transactions occurring through the SWIFT system (1). Traders are advised to select brokers regulated by reputable international authorities in their home jurisdictions to ensure adequate protection and oversight.
