Online Forex trading in Liberia is legal and operates under a managed floating exchange rate system overseen by the Central Bank of Liberia. Both Liberian and U.S. dollars are recognized as legal tender, and there are no restrictions on converting or transferring investment funds, profits, loans, or interest. Foreign exchange transactions can be conducted at commercial banks, licensed foreign exchange bureaus, petrol stations, and large supermarkets throughout the country (2).
The Central Bank of Liberia regulates all foreign exchange activities through comprehensive rules and regulations to maintain exchange rate stability. Commercial banks and licensed Foreign Exchange Bureau Association members are authorized to participate in the CBL's foreign exchange sale auctions, which are conducted weekly to facilitate access to foreign exchange for legitimate importers in a transparent and competitive manner. The CBL uses its foreign exchange auction as a policy tool and intervention mechanism to stabilize the exchange rate, facilitate imports, maintain low inflation rates, and spur economic growth (1).
"The Central Bank of Liberia's Sale Auction is intended to facilitate access to the proceeds from the auction by legitimate importers in a transparent and competitive manner. The CBL hereby issues this rules and regulations governing participations in the Sale Auction."
Foreign exchange operations must comply with CBL regulations, which require entities conducting foreign exchange business to obtain proper licensing. The exchange rate is determined by market demand and supply forces, though the CBL occasionally intervenes through auctions to manage volatility. Transfers exceeding US$10,000 must be reported to the CBL, and no more than US$7,500 in foreign currency banknotes can be moved out of Liberia at any one time (2).
